According to CBS DC, on October 9, separate accidents brought traffic to a halt on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the outer loop of the Capital Beltway in Maryland.

U.S. Park Police reported that a pedestrian was fatally struck by a minivan traveling southbound on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway around 4:54 a.m. just south of Route 175 in Jessup. All southbound lanes were blocked between Route 175 and Route 100 for five hours as police investigated the crash. According to authorities, the minivan driver remained on the scene.

In the second incident, a tractor-trailer overturned for unknown reasons on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway around 7 a.m. Before being turned upright, the truck was leaking fuel. The massive delays extended traffic for nearly nine miles. Images taken from a helicopter above the scene revealed that the tractor-trailer was hauling garbage.
