According to NBC 4 Washington, a shuttle bus overturned on Interstate 95 near Lorton, Virginia on March 23, killing one person and injuring 16 others. The hit-and-run driver responsible for the accident has been arrested and faces charges.

Virginia State Police said the shuttle bus, operated by American Transportation, was traveling south on Interstate 95 shortly before 3:30 a.m. Witnesses said a speeding, white, four-door passenger vehicle swerved into the bus’ path, colliding with the bus and causing it to run off the road, hit a guardrail and overturn.

All of the passengers in the shuttle bus were in their early 20s and were from Prince William County. The 16 passengers and the driver were transported to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured were flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of more serious injuries; however, one of those victims died at the hospital.

Thanks to help from witnesses, police were able to track down the driver of the white car to a home in Dumfries, where the 31-year-old man was taken into custody. The driver is charged with one count of felony hit-and-run and is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
