The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of one million spa and pool drain covers that pose entrapment hazards. The covers are dangerous products that could cause death or serious injury to kids and adults, according to the CPSC. There is a risk of a suction lock occurring and trapping someone in the drain. The CPSC says the manufacturers incorrectly rated the flow of water that the drains could handle.
These particular recalled drain covers are not responsible for any deaths, but there have been 11 deaths and catastrophic injuries from drain covers in the past. In 1996, a New Jersey girl died after being stuck to a pool drain despite several people attempting to free her. A lifeguard died after getting her leg caught in a pool drain. The drains have also disemboweled children who have sat on them.
In all, the CPSC says there have been 83 reports of pool and spa entrapments from 1999 to 2008, including the 11 deaths.
