A 23-year-old woman suffered fatal injuries last month when her Chrysler Sebring collided with a Department of Public Works truck in the Third Street Tunnel. The truck accident occurred just before midnight in the southbound lanes of the tunnel. Workers had stopped the Ford pickup truck to perform maintenance work in the tunnel. The workers had not yet exited the truck when the victim’s car collided with it.
The victim suffered serious head and upper torso injuries. Rescue workers rushed her to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Doctors treated three city workers for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities shut down the southbound lanes of the tunnel for several hours following the accident, but the lanes re-opened by 6:30 a.m.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. The Major Crash Reconstruction team is helping with the investigation. A spokesperson for the Department of Public Works confirmed that the workers are part of a crew that picks up large pieces of trash from the city’s roadways.
