Maryland Appeals Court Overturns $5 Million Asbestos Verdict

By Peter DePaolis
Attorney

A Maryland court recently overturned a previous $5 million verdict, stating that the Georgia-Pacific Corporation was not responsible for illnesses suffered by household members of workers who were exposed to asbestos at the company’s plants over 50 years ago.

The court stated that Georgia-Pacific was not obligated to warn family members of employees working for the company in the 1960s of the dangers of asbestos exposure. The court determined that the toxicity of asbestos was not known until federal regulations were issued in 1972, even though there are mountains of evidence showing that executives at dozens of companies knew that asbestos was making their own employees sick.

This court decision overturns a verdict awarded to a mesothelioma victim who developed the illness after being exposed to asbestos secondhand while washing her grandfather’s clothes during his employment at Georgia-Pacific Corporation in the 1960’s.
