Fairfax, formerly known as Providence, is an independent city within Fairfax County, Virginia. Situated in the Northern Virginia, Fairfax forms part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. According to the 2010 census, the population of Fairfax is 22,565.

Libraries, Higher Education and Transit

Major roadways in Fairfax include US-50, US-29, Fairfax Boulevard, VA-123, VA-236 and I-66.

The City of Fairfax operates the CUE Bus, its own independent bus network.

Old Town Fairfax has undergone an extensive redevelopment, which began in 2005. The redevelopment included a new City of Fairfax Regional Library and more than 45,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

George Mason University, the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is located just south of the Fairfax city limits. Fairfax purchased 150 acres for the university in 1958.

Fairfax’s Attractions and Entertainment

Fairfax hosts many annual events. From the Chocolate Lover’s Festival in Old Town Fairfax in early March to the Fall Festival in historic downtown Fairfax in October, there is plenty of entertainment in Fairfax year-round.

The Fairfax Eagles rugby team plays in the American National Rugby League.
