Despite wearing seatbelts, a mother and her child perished in a Virginia auto accident earlier this month in Fauquier County. The head-on car crash happened on Route 215 Vint Hill Road, according to a report at nbcwashington.com.
At approximately 8:20 a.m., a 54-year-old woman in a pickup truck crossed the centerline of the road. She collided head-on with a Toyota sedan driven by a 45-year-old man with his wife and child as passengers. The impact killed the man’s 46-year-old wife and 8-year-old son. Both drivers and the victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the car crash. Rescue workers transported the drivers to a nearby hospital.
Alcohol and speed did not play a role in the fatal accident, according to Virginia State Police.
Local residents say Vint Hill Road is dangerous. The road underwent improvements for safety about 10 years ago, but residents say it only made matters worse. There were five car accidents in the five months after the improvements, according to one local resident.
Vint Hill Road has dips and hills, which make it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic, said one homeowner. Authorities closed Vint Hill Road for several hours after the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
