Extreme weather poses problems from car accidents to occupational hazards. It is particularly prudent to be on guard during extreme weather conditions. Do not take risks that could jeopardize yourself or others. You can avoid car accidents by not driving when you know the roads are icy.

The weekend of February 5th through the 7th saw another record snowfall in the Washington, D.C. area. Two feet of snow came down in some areas, significantly limiting public transportation, rendering roads un-drivable, closing schools, and causing the loss of power to a large number of people. There was a spike in the number of traffic crashes and disabled vehicles. Toppled trees posed dangers. Snowplows themselves got stuck on roads. Even the U.S. Postal Service was unable to deliver mail due to hazardous conditions.

Many of the accidents that occurred during this storm could have been avoided. We are fortunate enough to live in a country where these weather-related problems are handled, for the most part, in a timely manner. Utility companies repair power outages in hours. Roads may take a day or two to be cleared, but they will be safe shortly. Provided you had enough of the necessities like food and some items to keep warm, most of these problems could have been avoided by merely staying at home and avoiding taking unnecessary risks.

If you or a loved one has suffered any injuries stemming from people taking unnecessary risks during inclement weather, please contact a Washington, D.C. personal injury lawyer at Koonz, McKenney, Johnson & DePaolis L.L.P.
