Welcome to Brain Injury Awareness Month

By Peter DePaolis

Did you know that, according to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), approximately 1.7 million people suffer a brain injury every year in the United States? That alarming number resulted in March becoming Brain Injury Awareness month across the country.

What the BIAA hopes to accomplish is raising awareness and educating people about the severity of brain injuries and head trauma. Dealing with a brain injury is a process that involves support from the victim’s loved ones as well as specialized treatment and rehabilitation. A spokesperson for the BIAA commented that the BIAA’s goal this month is to increase access to care for patients and highlight important brain injury research.

In addition, the BIAA wants to emphasize the randomness of brain injuries. A traumatic brain injury can strike anyone at any time, commented one BIAA spokesperson. It is crucial that patients have access to disease management in an effort to alleviate family dysfunction and suicide rates among brain injury patients.

While complete recovery from a serious brain injury is not usually possible, many patients learn to live relatively normal lives after a period of rehabilitation and adjustment. Having access to early diagnosis and treatment can limit the long-term effect of head trauma.
