On the heels of a May report that found Washington, D.C. drivers were the least knowledgeable about traffic rules, another study finds that DC drivers are the most accident-prone drivers in the United States. In a story at sfgate.com, it is the fourth year in a row that DC drivers hold that dubious honor.
The study by Allstate Corp. revealed that a DC driver gets in a car accident once every 4.8 years. That is more than twice the accident rate for the average driver in the United States, according to the report. A local auto mechanic said that the auto crashes occur because DC drivers are always in a hurry, ignore the speed limit, and cut in front of other drivers.
A representative of Allstate said the reason for the study is to bring awareness to unsafe driving habits in America’s largest cities. Using cell phones while driving, texting, and putting on makeup are behaviors that Allstate hopes will decline in the future. Another report from the U.S. Department of Transportation says that distracted driving is responsible for about 16 percent of all car accident deaths.
