We recently told you about the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) proposed ban on cell phone use while driving. While there are mixed reactions, the cell phone industry’s trade association recently spoke out in favor of the ban, sort of.
Washington, D.C.-based CTIA said that it supports a ban on manual cell phone texting while behind the wheel. However, the association said it would leave it up to the states and local governments to ban talking on cell phones while driving.
A spokesperson for CTIA said it is focused on educating consumers about responsible driving. The CTIA is partners with the National Safety Council, which sends a message to teens to stay off the phone when on the road.
In addition to the cell phone ban, the NTSB wants CTIA to support features that would disable certain electronic devices that are within a driver’s reach. A fatal car crash that killed two people and injured 38 others prompted the NTSB’s recommended ban. The investigation revealed that the driver responsible for the crash was texting before the accident.
