Last month, a DC Superior Court convicted a 35-year-old man of one count of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. The conviction stems from an accident last April, in which the man slammed his Dodge Ram into another vehicle containing a 37-year-old woman and her four children. The woman died and her four children survived with injuries. The children are ages two, six eight and 11, respectively.
The driver told police that he did not recall getting behind the wheel of his van before the accident. However, he did remember purchasing PCP-laced cigarettes with a friend earlier in the day. Once behind the wheel, he drove south on Alabama Avenue SE. His van crossed over and slammed into the wife and mother’s Toyota Camry. The man tested positive for PCP after the accident.
He was driving his van 52 mph in a 25-mph zone at the time of impact. It took rescue workers 45 minutes to remove the female victim from her vehicle. In exchange for the driver’s plea, prosecutors agreed to drop other charges against him. He still faces up to 50 years in prison if sentenced outside the plea. His sentencing will be in March.
