Inadequate medical care should not be tolerated, as it can result in injuries and death. This is especially true in cases where hospitals or nursing homes attempt to save money by understaffing, and do not having a sufficient number of employees working.
According to the Washington Business Journal, a dispute has arisen at a Washington D.C. hospital, where the nurse’s union claims that the facility is understaffed.
The news outlet reported that the hospital is opening an expanded emergency department, but National Nurses United, the nurse’s union, says that the hospital “routinely and dangerously understaffs nurses, putting patients at risk.”
The union is reportedly attempting to get a staffing grid put in place at the hospital to address the alleged issues.
“Providence just does not have enough nurses to provide safe care at the hospital, and the dangers to patients may get worse if the number of beds increases,” said Dwayne Collyer, a Providence emergency department nurse and NNU member, according to the Business Journal.
Who Should I Talk to If I Have Suffered an Injury Because of Hospital Understaffing?
A lack of staffing at a medical facility is a scary thought. Millions of people are treated in American emergency rooms each day, while more than 1.5 million elderly people are residents in nursing homes.
A lack of care because of staffing issues could result in delays in care, which could worsen injuries and/or cause death. Additionally, in nursing homes, a lack of staffing could result in a lack of hygienic care for residents, mix-ups in eating and drinking schedules and general mistreatment.
Healthcare providers should be more concerned about your health than their bottom line.
Speak with an attorney in the Washington D.C. area to learn what types of legal options are available to you if you have suffered personal injuries or have lost a loved one because of medical malpractice and/or a lack of staffing at a medical facility.
