Workers Throw Asbestos Tiles in Open Dumpster

Virginia Beach residents are worried that more than just spring may be in the air. Workers remodeling a grocery store in Virginia Beach alarmed residents when they threw asbestos-ridden floor tiles in an uncovered and unsealed dumpster. Residents are worried that the wind could easily disperse the asbestos fibers in an open container. Once airborne, asbestos fibers pose a serious health risk, and they can lead to mesothelioma, a serious form of lung cancer.

A local code enforcement supervisor said the dumpster would be sealed and removed. In addition, the supervisor said that workers would bag any remaining floor tiles before placing them in the dumpster. City officials said that code enforcement would return to the work site and monitor the removal and disposal of the asbestos materials. The contractor may face fines for improper disposal of the hazardous materials.

Mesothelioma symptoms often take decades to manifest in the body. Once diagnosed, the long-term outlook for mesothelioma patients is grim.
